Blackburn Road Residence

  • Hood River Design/Build
  • Approximately 2500 square feet
  • Apex Block Construction
  • Timber Frame Roof

Project started in the Summer of 2011, after the burning of the existing structure, and was completed in the Winter of 2012. The house was designed by Sorensen Construction, Inc. and the owner. The house is extremely energy efficient due to the following:

-Optimal Passive Solar orientation
-Insulated blocks stacked on the concrete footing to the roof assembly.
-Roof assembly consists of site built structurally insulated panels.
-All windows and doors are triple pane aluminum clad with Low E/Argon.
-Insulated slab on grade on the first floor.
-Insulated slab on framing on the second floor.
-Hydronic heat throughout.
-Hydronic heat and domestic heat sources: Ground Source Heat Pumps.
-Two HRV systems to enhance circulation and fresh air supply.

The roof assembly of the middle section, entry and clerestory consist of curved engineered beams. The East and West roof sections are framed with locally harvested wood for the beams, tongue and groove decking and the facia boards. The wood is clear coated with a slight tint for protection. Rock cladding makes up the front of the middle section. The rest of the exterior is veneered with Stucco. We have installed approximately 1500 square feet of Redwood decking to the South and East of the house.

The design and construction was a great challenge. The finished house exceeded our expectations in terms of its architectural stature, comfort and efficiency. We are quite proud of the Blackburn Residence.
